Study Hall with Maria V. Snyder

Dear Fantasy Fans,

I have a really cool book. It's a copy of Maria V. Snyder's Poison Study that's been marked up by the author herself with all kinds of neat little notes about the process of creating that story.

If you haven't read Poison Study yet, you should pick up a copy. The setting was once a typical royalty-and-magicians kingdom, but a military coup turned the place into a dictatorship with a fantasy communist feel. The story begins when the heroine, Yelena, is released from prison to become the new poison taster of the head general. Also, there's Valek. (Valek is awesome.)

Maria has kindly given me permission to post a few scans from the book that she altered. It's full of fun facts, highlights, and drawings, and while I can hardly scan the whole copy, I thought I'd share my favorite of her additions with other Poison Study fans.

a note added by Maria V. Snyder about the first appearance of Ari and Janco
a comment from Maria V. Snyder on the importance of seeing a character train in a new skill

(All of the images above link to larger, more legible copies.)

This copy of Poison Study was created as part of a fundraiser for First Book, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing books to children from low-income families. Please take a look at http://www.firstbook.org and consider making a donation.

I'll post one more set of scans and a few other little insights from the book on next Thursday, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you may want to check out Maria's website and her blog.

I'd love to hear about your own favorite Poison Study moments (or about other great reading-related charities), so please share them in the comments!

Update: The other post, complete with four more scans, is over here.

  1. I loved this story. It introduced me to Maria V Snyder and I quickly picked up everything else she'd written! I have a lovely UK version of Touch of Power that she signed and sent to me. It's proudly displayed on the top of my bookshelf!
    Thanks for sharing your scans.

  2. What a cool thing to have! I love learning about author's processes - it's one of the reason I'm so addicted to convention panels. I hadn't heard of this book before, but it sounds really interesting. I'll have to check it out.

  3. I love this book! And I thought my autographed copy of Fire Study was neat...this takes the cake! It would be so great to have a "First Book" copy from all your favorite authors.
