things I like: shark attack art

Today I went to the National Gallery of Art to see some special exhibits, the museum bookshop, and my favorite painting:

Brooke Watson and the Shark

Yeah, it's a picture of a shark attack.

It's called Watson and the Shark, and was painted by John Singleton Copley in 1778. The plaque under the frame explains that the guy was rescued, lost half of one leg and his other foot, and later went on to become the Lord Mayor of London. The National Gallery of Art website has a lot of interesting information about the painting. Wikipedia says it's the first shark attack that was fully documented.

The painter made two later versions. I've seen the one in Boston (it's displayed next to a copy by Henry Sargent), but not the one in Detroit yet.
